1. Jim “Kimo” West produced the music track for “Weird Al” Yankovic’s smash hit, “White and Nerdy.” This song is currently #2 on iTunes!
2. Jim “Kimo” West is from right here in Tampa! He attended King High School and USF! He was a co-founder of Tampa’s first all-original progressive rock band, Mythril! Similarly to Clang some 15-20 years later, Mythril was centered around the USF Music Department, and even occasionally featured USF faculty members Hilton Jones and Art Woodbury.
3. Jim “Kimo” West recently was awarded the "LA Treasure" award by the Los Angeles Dept of Cultural Affairs for his efforts in bringing slack key guitar to a wider audience.
4. Jim West has recorded and toured with “Weird Al Yankovic” for over 20 years, earning 3 Grammys in the process.
5. Jim “Kimo” West will appear on “The Tonight Show” November 2 with Weird Al.
6. Jim “Kimo” West was a co-founder and engineer at the legendary Hitmakers Studio here in Tampa.

The Blue Shark has been a Ybor City landmark for the past decade or so. Although it is generally regarded as the top Ybor spot for the over-30 crowd, people of all ages have a great time there. Recently the Blue Shark moved, to 1502 E 7th Avenue! It's just up the street from the old location, a block and a half to the west! It's a beautiful place! You will love the new Blue Shark! There's an upstairs and a downstairs! It's only a few feet from the Centro Ybor parking garage on 15th St!

Johnny does Nashville!

Recently, Downtown West Events sent me, Johnny G Lyon, to Nashville, Tennessee. What a trip I had! First, I appeared at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge! Then, I performed live at the Ryman Auditorium, home of the Grand Ole Opry! (Or, at least to me, it will always be the home of the Opry. It's also, as Merle said, where "some damn fool told Elvis to go back to drivin' a truck!")
Then, I performed live at the Country Music Hall of Fame! I had only been in Nashville a few days, but I was on top of the world!

Inside the hall, I had a great time, with Bob Wills, Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn just to name a few. I watched a video about rockabilly. It was great, with Elvis, Carl P., Jerry Lee... and then this cute little 50's babe comes up to the mike (on the video)... she's polite and soft-spoken, with an acoustic guitar... probably gonna be boring... then she spits out: "Hard headed woman, soft-hearted man, been a-causin' trouble ever since the world began!" and she ROCKS! intense like early Elvis! Shakin' and Poundin'... and Wailin'! and an awesome sexy 50's dress! I'd never heard a 50's rockabilly babe like this before! I was in LOVE! Turns out it's Wanda Jackson, and she was in fact the only real rockabilly babe of the 50's! And, sure enough, when she appeared on the Opry, another damn fool (not the one who told Elvis to go back to driving a truck) made her wear something over her shoulders, telling her "You can't show your shoulders!" I bought her CD, it's good, real good. But the video is AWESOME. she pumped. i wish i could get a copy of that video. But it's worth going to the Hall of Fame just to see that.

It has been very eventful in JGLB land the last few weeks. We were featured in this article... We played the enormously successful Krewes Kare benefit and the Mike Flore Memorial Benefit. Then, we started a new company, and along with Sticks of Fire, our company promoted a concert with the Rubber City Rebels, Hat Trick Heroes, and Roppongi's Ace. Members of our band are trying our hand at concert promotion. We are bringing in one of the most fun "punk-rock" bands from the 70's and 80's, the LEGENDARY RUBBER CITY REBELS (32,700 google results) from the punk capital of the world, Akron Ohio! They were contemporaries of Devo and the Dead Boys, and they rock just as manic as ever! And it aint just punk... it's damn good rock and roll. Think Ramones meets Stones meets Three Stooges! We have been RCR fans since the 80's, when we toured California with them. We even wrote a song with them! They were the hottest (and craziest) band around... and they're coming here to Tampa Town!

Mike "Craze" Flore Memorial Benefit 5-21-06

The Mike "Craze" Flore memorial benefit will take place May 21 at Skippers Smokehouse. Our band will play at about 8:30 or 9. We hope to be joined by some great horn players, perhaps Ron, Bill, Thor and some others? Ron and Bill were like brothers to Mike... And perhaps Mike never met Thor, but I know he'd love his playing. Maybe the Count too? He's a bass player, but he was a buddy of Mike's, they played together quite a bit...

“The World’s Largest Hurricane Party!”
(To benefit Krewes Kare and Angel Flight Southeast’s hurricane relief efforts)
Hurricane season is almost upon us and Krewes Kare and Angel Flight Southeast have teamed up again this year to prepare for their continuing mission of hurricane relief.
Building on the mission that was begun last year in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the two inter-twined organizations are holding “The World’s Largest Hurricane Party”, Saturday, May 13, 2006, to raise funds and public awareness for hurricane victims.
Everyone is invited to the “The World’s Largest Hurricane Party” that will feature food, fun, dancing, and refreshments. The party will be held at “Hooper’s Hollow”, the outdoor waterfront park owned by the Shriners and located behind the A La Carte Pavilion at 4050 Dana Shores Drive in Tampa. The fun and festivities will run from 3 P.M. to 9 P.M. on May 13th just a couple of weeks before the official start of the 2006 hurricane season.
A $20 donation at the door gets you a fun day with free food, soda, water, and beer and live music by three favorite local bands, including “Johnny G. Lyon & JGLB,” who will play in the afternoon, and “Crossfire.” You’ll also have the chance to win some great raffle prizes.

Krewes Kare is a volunteer, non-profit, charitable organization comprised of all 57 "parade krewes" in the Tampa Bay area. Following their inception in September, 2005, through the partnership with Angel Flight Southeast, Krewes Kare sent more than 11 tons of supplies on Angel Flights to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina and trucked even more supplies south to help storm victims in South Florida after Hurricane Wilma.

"Comb My Hair" is a song from the first Johnny G Lyon / JGLB album, "Good Cheap Rock N Roll (1990)." Comb My Hair was also featured in the 1985 Columbia Pictures film "Just One of the Guys." "Comb My Hair" is a rockabilly-influenced song written in 1981. Authorship is credited to "Johnny Lyon and Rod Firestone." Rod is the leader of the Rubber City Rebels, who come to Tampa June 9, 2006.
We first recorded this song at Mad Dog Recording Studio (then in Venice, Ca.) in 82 or 83. Tchad Blake was the engineer. Firestone produced. Russell Battelene played drums. My buddies from Tampa, Jim West and Stephen Jay also played. Jerry Kaywell, now known as "Father Jerry," Randy Rice, Twila Whidden, Solly Gersh and Gilbert Hansen also contributed. Our manager did a great job of working out the details. Jim played most of the lead guitar. I played guitar and piano, and I sang. It was a kick-ass recording of a kick-ass song.
Not long after, Firestone was approached by some movie industry types who were looking for some cheap original music for movies. They listened to music by his legendary band, The Rubber City Rebels, but couldn't find anything they liked. Previously, Rod had had 2 songs, "Party On" and "I Did It" on the soundtrack of the movie "Hardbodies." I played guitar and piano, and sang backup vocals on those 2 tunes. So Rod pitched "Comb My Hair" to the above mentioned movie industry types. They bought it!
Rod and the Rubber City Rebels are great friends and an awesome band. I have always wanted to produce a Rubber City Rebels concert here in Tampa! That's a great idea, if I do say so myself!
I don't know what exactly happened to that particular master recording of that song. Perhaps I gave the only copy to the movie guys. But you can still hear that recording in the movie, "Just One of the Guys."
The recording from our 1990 album, "Good Cheap Rock N Roll," is the version we have here. We recorded it in 1989. It features Ray Blade, Manny Yanes, Rob Stoney, and myself. Phil engineered, and Phil and I produced it jointly. It's a kick ass recording of a kick ass song.

Our concert at Lowry Park was a blast. I don't think I've ever had that much fun playing any gig anywhere. And I have seen the video of the concert, the sound and video quality are excellent!

The concert will be replayed Wednesday and Friday on Brighthouse Cable Channel 15 in Hillsborough County. I think Wednesday's show is at 2 PM, but you might want to make sure it doesn't start at 1 PM. Friday's show should be at 7 PM, but start watching at 6 to be sure.

The confusion is due to the fact that we shared the bill with another band, 360, and i think they have their set first. So if you tune in early, enjoy 360, and wait for our show to begin!

There's something about the "team" aspect of basketball. If you play on a good team... whether just for one game on a playground, or for years in high school or college, or for a career in the pros, you're part of something that, in some small way, will never die.

If you are on a good team, that plays well together, but is overmatched... and believe me, I know that feeling real well... you got an opportunity to see what kind of man you are. If you can stand up to the challenge, and hold your own, perhaps you can inspire your teammates, and together, overcome adversity and beat the odds.

Bradley Mosley was on a good team that was overmatched. And he showed he was a hell of a man. I loved watching him play. He played on the 2003-04 team that went 1-15 in CUSA. There was something about that team that made me fall hard in love with the USF basketball program. They lost. They lost again. They lost again and again. But they never quit. And Mosley was, along with Terrence Leather, the best player on that team...

Bradley Mosley is no longer alive in the traditional sense. But I aint gonna say rest in peace... yet, cause i say he's got one more job to do.

Bradley Mosley, your job is to inspire your teammates. Stay right next to Coach McCullum. Don't let them forget how hard you fought. Yeah, you were always overmatched... but you never quit. Solly and company... Bradley Mosley's gonna be watching you. Make him proud.

This Thursday, Oct. 13th, the Thieves of San Lorenzo in conjunction with Tommy Stephens announce the 2nd Annual Rooster Funeral Dress Rehearsal re-named this year as “Rooster Rehearsal Relief” to be held at The Italian Club, at 1731 7th Av. in Ybor City starting at 6pm. Come dressed in your finest James E. Rooster attire! In recognition of James E, please bring pet items for the canines and felines affected by hurricanes. There will be cash food and bar, raffles, and auctions to benefit hurricane victims. Shamrock Eric DJ will be the MC and auctioneer, and music will come from the Johnny G Lyon Band. This weekend, we play one 30 minute show Saturday Sept 24 at Skippers Smokehouse, as part of their 25th anniversary celebration. There will be numerous other excellent bands as well. I personally am looking forward to seeing my good friends Pat Harpe and the Quivering Rhythm Hounds and Ronny Elliott and Steve Connelly, Magic Marco, Freight Train Annie, Damon Fowler (hopefully with Riley B Charles), Mod Squad... I know guys from all those bands. Great people, great bands.

We play Saturday sept 24 one 30 minute show. better be there about 3 if ya dont want to miss us, but i would say we'll actually play about 3:30 or 4:00.

That's our only PUBLIC show this weekend. We'll be back at the Blue Shark next weekend.

Check out the most recent JGLB party time caught on film, on Buffalo Bills Fan Appreciation Night. Ray Blade and Ben Jammin’ were bangin’ and jammin’. Johnny G. Lyon was wailin’. As usual, Tommy Duncan was just standing there, doing as little as possible.

In the early 1980's, Los Angeles was my home. Our band was called "Johnny Lyon and the Hitmakers" (and a few other names).
We made some nice friends. One person who was VERY nice to us was Esther Wong, who passed away recently. I learned of this bad news when I checked out my good friends The Rubber City Rebels website.
If you wanted to hear me jam in 1982 or 1983, your best bet was to check out Madame Wong's West, or possibly the original Madame Wong's in Chinatown. Thank you, Ms. Wong, for letting me perform at your very prestigious venue, almost certainly the most prestigious venue i have ever played with any regularity... (other than perhaps the Blue Shark)

Slack Key West by JIM WEST aka "Kimo" West!

got an e-mail from JIM WEST! He's got a new web site... and a new CD! Order "Slack Key West" here!
Jim is a Tampa native. Before he moved to L.A. in 1981, he was in "Slaves of Rhythm," "Tons of Fun" and "Z-Boss" and other bands here in Tampa with myself and others. Out in L.A., We were both first in the "Kaywell Brothers" with Father Jerry, then we started "Johnny Lyon and the Hitmakers." Jim has gone on to do a lot of cool stuff. Perhaps most notably, he is Weird Al Yankovic's guitarist. In addition to recording and touring with Al, he writes and records a lot of TV and movie scores and soundtracks.
He's been doing Hawaiian "Slack-Key" guitar for a while now. It's pretty cool.
Jim will be touring this fall. What would be a good venue for him to perform in Tampa? Perhaps Friday Morning Musicale or someplace like that? Any suggestions appreciated, just "comment!"

This is kind of an excerpt from my Bucs Diaries series.
TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY: I sang the National Anthem at BUCS game, 8-5-95!!!
After I came back from California in 1984, the Bucs generally sucked. Sometime around 1985 or 86, I made a statement, "If I sing the National Anthem at a BUCS game, they'll never lose again." Some DJs like Russ Albums, Charlie Logan and Ron and Ron picked up on this, as well as Tribune sportwriters like (the late great) Tom Ford, Nick Pugliesi and former Tribune writers Chris Harry and Pat (Tyji) Yasinskas along with many others. Nevertheless, all through the 80s and the early 90s, I was not asked to sing the Anthem, and the Bucs kept right on losing. From 1984 through 1994 (11 years), The Bucs were 49-126, with no playoff appearances.
Then, in 1995, the Glazer family bought the team from the Culverhouses. Something changed.
My friend, attorney Joe Frank, contacted Rich McKay. Of course, I could sing the National Anthem at a BUCS game.
The first game the BUCS played under the new ownership was August 5, 1995 preseason game against the New York Jets. Immediately prior to the game, I walked out to the middle of the Tampa Stadium field and sang the National Anthem of the United States of America. It was the biggest performance of my life. I wore a sport coat, tie and dress slacks. As advised, I wore earplugs, to block out the echo. I started LOW. The third note, "say," should be the lowest note I can sing. I sang it by the book, with no extra melisma or whatever you call it when singers embellish the Anthem. I felt confident as I sang. After I finished, the crowd roared. Thank you. People told me I was excellent. I was very appreciative of the overwhelming goodwill.
Since 1995, when I sang the National Anthem, the BUCS are 85-75, have made the playoffs 5 times, have won 5 playoff games, including Super Bowl XXXVII in Sandy Eggo.
There is something of a move afoot for an encore performance. Stay tuned!

USF Men's Basketball Guards: trade, triumph, trial, tragedy... and TONY!

There are 5 current and former USF basketball guards in the news recently.
Trade: Chucky Atkins. I loved asking this trivia question during the 2004-2005 season: "Name every college ever attended by the starting guards of the Los Angeles Lakers." correct answer: USF! The starting Laker guards: Kobe and Chucky Atkins. Kobe went to the NBA straight from high school to the NBA, and Chucky played 4 years at USF! One of the best USF players ever, Chucky is by far the USF grad who has had the most success in the pros. Chucky has been traded to the Washington Wizards. Good lucky, CHUCKY! (not to be confused with Chucky, or Chick!)
Triumph!: Anddrikk Frazier, the 1994 Tampa Tribune Prep Basketball Player of the Year who played point guard at the University of South Florida, has been named head coach at Hillsborough High. Frazier, great nephew of Smokin' Joe Frazier, played 4 years (actually 3, see comments) at USF. He was a very bright guy, and a coach's favorite. I'd say he was one of the first USF hoopsters to wear dreadlocks. Sorry, but i can't find a pic of him.
TRIAL: NOT A LEGAL TRIAL, but a "trial" in the form of a huge challenge for Bradley Mosley. it ain't what you think, but it's a lot more serious then legal problems. In 2003-2004, USF basketball had a rough year. But Mosley was perhaps the best player on that team (Swift and Leather were pretty good too). We were looking forward to a great senior season from this fine young man. But then, the challenges began. Bradley Mosley is a great kid and he is gonna beat this thing. He was granted an extra year of eligibility and he will be playing this season as a senior after he heals up. Use the form at the bottom of this page to send Bradley a message.
TRAGEDY: Maurice Webster. from the Tampa Tribune: "Former USF point guard Maurice Webster, who played on the Bulls' first NCAA Tournament team in 1990, died Tuesday of an apparent heart attack. He was 36." RIP, Maurice, I remember your game and respected you as a MAN, and a good man at that. Above all, thank you for playing for USF.

Right now, we are gonna venture into Sticks of Fire's turf (local politics) just a bit... to name Tampa City Councilperson Kevin White our JGLB PUBLIC SERVANT OF THE MONTH for July.
Why? Read this article. When Councilperson White says, "I think we have put all the restrictions on Ybor nightclub owners that they can bear," I like what he's saying.
While Ybor ain't perfect, government regulation has helped... not at all. Do you agree, Tommy?
I can tell ya this: Ybor is safe, and it's still fun, as long as the JGLB is at the BLUE SHARK!

Garnell Wilds 2005

UPDATE: Garnell is now with the Carolina Panthers!
Not only are the BUCS back in camp, all the other NFL teams are too.
We will be following the BUCS closely this year, as we do every year. This blog started pretty much at the end of the 2004 NFL regular season, so we have not commented much about the BUCS, except for the "my life as a BUCS fan" series (only one installment so far). Full disclosure: Both Tommy and I are BUCS season ticket holders. Also, I am a personal friend of Mike Alstott.
Other than the BUCS, we will follow a few other NFL players, including players who affect the fortunes of our fantasy football league.
However, the individual player we will be following most closely is Washington Redskins cornerback GARNELL WILDS.
Garnell is a second year player from Virginia Tech. He's 5' 11" and 196 pounds. He's got AWESOME dreadlocks.
Garnell is from Tampa! He played high school football for our great friend Earl Garcia at Hillsborough High! What more reasons could we possibly have to pull for this awesome guy?
Well, how about this: His dad, George Wilds, owns the Blue Shark in Ybor City.
Garnell had an outstanding college career. He led the Big East in interceptions in his junior year. Last year, his first as a pro, Garnell spent the first part of the year on the practice squad. But when he got to play in the last few games, he performed very well, particularly for an undrafted rookie. Against the Vikings, he covered the NFL's best reciever, Randy Moss, in single coverage, and he graded very highly (5 tackles). He is obviously very coachable and likable, which is important in football, very much a team sport.
Life in the NFL is very tough. The work, both physical and mental, is much harder than most people can realize. So let's get behind this great young man. Visit the Blue Shark soon, and let George know that you're a Garnell Wilds fan.

Perhaps you have read this article.

I would like to clarify: I don't think anybody living in any residential area should have to tolerate loud noise coming from commercial areas. But the way this noise ordinance is currently enforced is ridiculous.

When somebody has a complaint about noise in Ybor City, they should find the source of the noise that's creating the disturbance, instead of subjecting everybody to a specific DB requirement that makes no sense. In other words, a resident on 5th ave and 19th st may be bothered by a thumping bass coming from a particular club. The officers should determine the source of that particular complaint, and compel that specific offender to lower the volume. Instead, they go up and down 7th Ave. in Ybor City, standing in the doorways of individual businesses with a meter that measures DBs. Although our band is generating no complaints from residents, when the enforcement agent stands in our doorway, he can usually get a reading that puts us in violation of the ordinance. Significance of THREE

As many of you know, there are three things I believe in: #1, #2, #3.
There are three fine individuals who work with me most Friday and Saturday nights.
But let's never forget These Three Great Individuals, who have touched so many. Three Icons to whom I looked up as a child. Still today, I hope that within my wretched body I hold perhaps a mere fraction of the genius that These Three Gentlemen consistently exhibited for years... I recently saw a drama-documentary about them. It was pretty damn good. At the end, I cried tears of joy for These Three Exemplary Citizens. Incidently, I though this actor was damn good. Anyway, just wanted to pay tribute to These Superstars.

Tyrone "Ty" Granderson Jones
I'd say it was early 1982. Our band arrived at the club, the name of which escapes me right now, but it was in Studio City or Universal City or North Hollywood. It was a trendy place on Ventura Boulevard, which you've heard of in this song. I think we booked the gig by phone, so we had never been to the club. What should we expect?

Well, here comes the "manager," about 5 foot 6 inches of attitude. Maybe 5'5" or whatever. Without so much as a "How do you do," he says, "Put your shit over there. You don't get no fucking sound check. Play at 9:30. Don't fucking be late. You don't get nothing free. Don't mess with our shit. If you mess anything up, clean it up. Don't give nobody no shit. Most important, don't give me no fucking shit!" He was a pretty grouchy dude, and kinda scary! Well, ok, let's do what he says, and we'll try to make the best of it.

Before the gig, I put on my favorite t-shirt. It is orange, and it has the sleeves removed. It says, "Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 1981 NFC Central Division Champions." I go back, and encounter the grouchy "manager."

He breaks into a huge smile! He says, "Man, are you from Tampa? I'm from fucking Tampa! YOU MY HOME BOY!!!!"

Of course, I gotta get to know this guy! Turns out he's a struggling actor named Tyrone Jones, AKA Tyrone Granderson Jones, AKA Ty Granderson Jones, etc. He went to Plant High, FSU and Florida A&M. He studied under Lee Strasberg (Hyman Roth). He was a fuckin actor! The people you meet in LA! Now, you can get to know him too!

And of course, he loved our band, then known as "The Original Johnny Lyon and the Fabulous Famous Hitmakers," or TOJLATFFH. He became our band's official MC, introducing us at our shows.

Since those days, Tyrone has been in lots of movies and TV shows. I think he's proudest of his work in "Con Air." I really loved his brief but awesome role in "Harlem Nights." One of his most recent projects appears to be "Tapped Out."He may have two movies out soon: "Night Train," where Ving Rhames plays Sonny Liston and Ty Granderson Jones plays Elijah Muhammad! Night Train also stars James Woods! and, Short Fuse, where he plays "Big Paul!" He hangs with a rough crew or a tough bunch sometimes! And, it looks like Ty has got his own production company, and has written his own screenplay! It's called "Sidewinder," and it's set here in the Tampa Bay area!

Despite what you may see in certain places, I'm pretty sure Tyrone is about my age, if not a year or two older.

the TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS part one

I was recently asked: "johnny, you write about USF basketball all the time. why do you never write about the BUCS? You're a long time season ticket holder. You sang the National Anthem at a BUCS game. You even went to Super Bowl XXXVII in Sandy Eggo. Why no BUC LOVE on this here JGLB blog?"

To understand my feelings about THE TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS, we must put things in perspective by going back to the beginning.

The Bucs began playing in 1976. The quarterback was Steve Spurrier. As a 21 year old struggling musician, I had other priorities. I remember being very happy when the BUCS beat Hank Stram's New Orleans Saints for their first victory, after 26 losses, in 1977. But I really didn't pay much attention, even when the BUCS made the playoffs after the 1979 season, although I remember the euphoria after we beat the Eagles to win the first playoff game we ever played.

In the summer of 1980, I had the blues. I needed something new to get interested in. Somehow, I fell in love with the BUCS. They struggled that year, and so did I. But I was in love (with the BUCS that is), and it would be long time before i cared about anything else more than i cared about the BUCS.

Next year, 1981, I moved to Los Angeles. I kept up with the BUCS as best I could. I bought my first TV that year, to watch the BUCS beat Detroit, in a victory that propelled them to a playoff berth. I had my friend, the late great James Sabo (i must do a post about him someday), send me a "1981 NFC Central Division Champions" t-shirt, which I proudly wore around L.A. (One day, while wearing it, I met another Tampa native living in LA. Check him out! I MUST do a post about him soon! check out his gallery!)

The Bucs had a winning team, and went to the playoffs, in the strike shortened 1982 season as well. Then, in 1983, it all came to a crashing halt. Doug Williams left the team, and the Bucs went 2-14.

By spring of 1984, I had been in LA for two and a half years. I had a lot of nice things happen, I did a lot of interesting things, played some great gigs with some great people. I went to parties in Beverly Hills. I worked on movie soundtracks, jammed with and auditioned for bands that readers of this blog, and people worldwide, are familiar with. I should someday do an in-depth post about my L.A. years.

Of course, a lot of things didn't go as well as i would have liked. And... I really missed Tampa, and I really missed the BUCS. So, in the April 1984, I loaded up the truck and moved back to Tampa, where some really unexpected things happened in the next few years. Of course, I attended my first BUCS game in years. Steve DeBerg came off the bench to lead the BUCS to a big win over Detroit in week 3 of the 1984 season. They won 3 out of 4 games. DeBerg looked good, they had Wilder, Selmon, Hugh Green, Giles, House... it seemed like happy days were back for the BUCS.

I was disappointed that my LA experience did not lead to me being a rock star, but proud of my BUCS (3-3). Little did I know that both the BUCS fortunes... and my own... were about to be reversed... the Bucs suddenly, my own only slightly more gradually.

Maybe it's Dennis! in 1974, I met Buck, who took me to meet Jay Friss AKA Ray Blade. We jammed, then Buck said, I'm gonna go get Dennis. Dennis came over and played the hell out of a guitar! That was our first Tampa band: Ray, Buck, Dennis and me. I hope that's who's coming!

Or maybe it's Dennis, AKA Torpedo D on the Hammond Be Free! Our band was great when we had Dennis!

But it may be another Dennis, one that will try to stop us from rockin at the Blue Shark this weekend. But dont worry: WE GONNA ROCK!

50 years ago today, Bill Haley and the Comet's hit, "Rock Around the Clock," hit #1. Some people like to say this is the beginning of rock and roll.
I love Haley, I love this song, and the guitar solos on "Rock Around the Clock" are absolutely knocked out. But in my opinion, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys invented rock and roll kinda gradually in the mid to late 40's. And sure enough, in this article, Haley makes my case, saying Wills was his idol. Now, the article mentions other songs, "Good Rockin' Tonight (1947)" being the oldest. Now, I personally would also give a nod to the man with the tuxedo and the shiny 335*, who cut his first records in 1949. Also, this article mentions one of the great movies of all time, "Blackboard Jungle" which is also credited with kinda starting the rock n roll generation. "Blackboard Jungle" starred, among others, a very very BAD Vic Morrow**, and Sidney Portier. Man, I love that movie. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROCK N ROLL! I'm gonna PLAY some damn rock n roll at the BLUE SHARK this weekend... on my bad-ass 61 Fender Stratocaster Hardtail WOODY!
* Eric Clapton's description of BB in "Riding With The King." In the original version of the song, John Hiatt described Elvis, the original subject of the song: "A red cape and a shiny Colt 45."
** Vic Morrow was one of the greats. He starred in "Combat." He was a guest on The Untouchables starring Robert Stack as Elliott Ness. USF Men's basketball opponents

USF basketball just released its' Big East Conference matchups. Holy cow, it's murderer's row!

Just think of the powers coming to town: in addition to non-conference Michigan at the Times Forum, we get (presumably at the SunDome) : Connecticut, DePaul, Georgetown*, Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. John’s, Villanova, and West Virginia (JERRY WEST!)

on the road, we play Cincinnati, Georgetown, Louisville, Notre Dame, Providence, Rutgers, Seton Hall and Syracuse (JIM BROWN!) ok, Jim Brown is football, but WTF.

No wonder Dick Vitale says Robert McCullum has the toughest job in college basketball!

we won't play Marquette or Pittsburgh this year...

two years ago, then JGLB employee Tara went with me to the SunDome to see USF host Marquette in an NCAA basketball game.

a Marquette guard caught fire. He was making shots from all over the building. He couldn't be stopped. He was incredibly cocky. He knew no one could stop him. USF fans expressed their awe, kinda approving and disapproving at the same time, as we sports fans can when some cocky kid is ripping our favorite team apart. He pissed us off, but we had to admire him.

Tara was impressed. They are about the same age.

Recently, this kid was drafted by the Orlando Magic. Stay tuned.

Hank Stram

I remember his words, spoken (on TV) in the midst of another terrible Bucs season during the 80's, during another terrible game, probably coached by Leeman Bennett.

He said, "I don't know anything about football. If I did, I'd be down there on the sideline, coaching. But..."

and then, he pointed out a flaw in the reasoning of the Bucs' coach... one that was critical, a major contributing factor in another Buccaneer loss... and he left me with the feeling that he would really love a shot coaching our Bucs, that he really felt he could do a better job than Bennett or whoever was the coach at that time.

And yet, much earlier, in the 70's, after the Bucs had lost 26 teams, they finally won their first game ever. And wouldn't you know it, the coach of the losing team was none other than... him.

I'm not sure what it all means, except i can tell you what it meant to me: I wanted him to coach our team in the 80's. I thought we could win with him, and he surely would have taken the job...

Now he's gone. I feel like I knew him well, because I probably watched 100 games which featured him as color commentator. I liked him. I wanted him to coach my team.

RIP, Coach Stram.

coming to the SunDome this fall

The USF Bulls Mens' Basketball Team released their 2005-06 non-conference schedule on Wednesday. You want big-time college basketball? Perennial powerhouse Michigan will make the trip down Fowler Avenue to face Coach McCullum's squad Dec. 10. Saturday night's alright!
Of course, as much as Michigan is an excellent program, we will be facing a lot of great teams this year in our own conference, the Big East. USF's conference schedule has not been released yet.
For those of you who aren't aware, most "experts" will probably pick USF to finish last in the Big East.
We will also face an old foe in non-conference: our perennial rival, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) comes to the SunDome. USF has played 53 games against UAB, and it's always a dogfight.
Sometimes we have fun in the SunDome. Sometimes we do not have as much fun as we wish. But I hope to attend all the games. Hey mister schedule maker: how about a 6 pm tipoff on saturday games? That way I can make it to work on time! If not, I'll just be late... Ok, George?
USF once had a guard named Cedric Smith who said: "To our fans, we're their Duke, we're their North Carolina." Mr. Smith, you hit the nail on the head.

Fantasy Football

We have an awesome fantasy football league. it's called the "JUST FOR FUN LEAGUE" (JFFL). It was founded in 2000. Charter members (6 year veterans) include Ray Blade, Stan, Hucabuc, Lewkobraves, TTFKATZ, and myself. Tommy and Dirty E joined the second year. CK Smooth, Buzz and Das are also in our league. It's a great league. Tommy is the champion right now. Dirty E and Ray Blade are former champions. Stan and TTFKATZ are former champs as well. CK is the scoring champion. "Greek Domination" (?) is the current regular season champion. Das won rookie of the year. Generally I field an excellent team, evidenced by 3 scoring championships, 2 regular season championships, 2 regular season 2nd place finishes, 1 second place scoring finish, and 4 playoff appearances in 5 years. I've won more games than anyone else in JFFL history, and I've scored more points than anyone else in JFFL history. But I've never won our championship game, which has been called the JFFL Super Bowl, the JFFL Championship Game, the Fun Bowl, and the Just For Fun Bowl.
I hope to have a good year this year. First I must select my keepers... possibilities are Corey Dillon, Trent Green, Clinton Portis, Reggie Wayne, Nate Burleson, Ashley Lelie, Antonio Gates...

neat cars

I have always thought that these cars are neat, I mean real neat. I also have always loved these cars. GTX, GTX. I love old cars. yeah, yeah, yeah! I like these Cadillacs. I prefer these Cadillacs. 59 Cadillacs! 59 caddies!
Perhaps the neatest car lately is this 48 (or 49?) Mercury. I think it's a 48, but some news reports call it a 49. The 49 Merc was one of the turning point cars in US automobile history, as Ford had all new lines with more modern design. What's more, James Dean drove one in "Rebel Without a Cause". Anyway, I think the design on that 48 Merc oughta be mass produced. I like the amphibious thing... so do these guys!
Anyway, there's another point to be made here: Cuba's got the greatest collection of pre-61 American cars anywhere except Hollywood... here's a nice 58 chevy outside a very historic looking buliding. the first car i ever drove much was a blue 58 chevy... sure would love to visit Cuba someday.

THE Museum

There's a few people on this planet that I got a lotta respect for. I mean, this is a respect beyond reverence, beyond idolatry. I happen to think that these people were placed on this earth to make it a better place, and the world really would be a different place without them.

Top of the list: The KING of The Blues, Mister B! B! KING!

BB King is my favorite all time musician to such a degree, that Malvern Gasperon is my second favorite.

Malvern Gasperon is a fictional bluesman, a role played in the Movie Blues Brothers 2000 by The KING of The Blues, Mister B! B! KING!

Anyway, There's now a NEW museum in Indianola Mississippi: The BB KING MUSEUM! (speaker alert: watch for music) The song you will hear "3 O'Clock Blues," was recorded in 1949.

Soon, I will write a post about the song "How Blue Can You Get," as heard on the 1972 album "BB King Live at Cook County Jail," which I believe is the best guitar playing I have ever heard. Another version of that song is what I call the "We Are The World" of the Blues, and I will explain why i feel that way.

Funny thing: from all I can tell, BB is just as great as an 80 year old as he's ever been. His vocal power and guitar wizardry / dexterity are as profoundly awesome as ever.

Congrats to the Greatest of All, BB KING. (speaker alert!) I gotta visit Indianola sometime soon, who else would like to go?

Tony Grier: A Raging BULL!

Thanks to my great buddy, Tony Grier!

As in former USF Basketball Player Tony Grier, a 6'3" guard who was one of the best players in BULL history. If my info is correct, he is still the Bulls 6th all time leading scorer.

Tony's writing a book about USF Basketball in the Sundome, a book that nobody is more qualified to write than he. In my opinion, he was one of our first big time recruits. He is also a great guy in a way that benefits our entire community. In a way, he built the SunDome.

For what it's worth, the best our band ever played may have been in the Sundome, in the 80's, opening for The Outlaws and Marshall Tucker. Why? Well, Max made friends with the soundman... We got as good a mix as they could give us, which an opening band ordinarily never gets...

Tony occasionally comments on our blog. Hopefully he will become a regular contributor. Read his comment on this post!
